Unfortunately, from the mid 20s brain function begins to decline. It becomes more noted though for some of us as we approach our early 50s.
There are many ways we can slow this decline. Training your brain with new activities as we age can help keep the brain “supple”. We are never too old to learn something new. Learn a new language, take a new course, read more books, pick up a new hobby, or any new activity which forces us to use our brain will help fight memory loss as we grow older. Learning to relax also helps immensely because stress inhibits optimum brain functioning.

Product Review: Bigelow Mint Medley:
I tried the Bigelow Mint Medley tea, but was less than pleased with this brand of peppermint tea because of the taste. This tea consists of peppermint leaves, spearmint leaves, rose hips, lemon peel and hibiscus. However, I found it less sweet tasting with a more bitter smell than the Celestial Seasonings Tea. Not my Number One Mint tea. Check out the Bigelow Teas website here.

Product Reveiw: Celebration Herbals Spearmint Leaf Tea
Spearmint leaf tea by Celebration Herbals is a certified organic tea free of caffeine. It contains only spearmint leaves (mentha spicata) and has a sweet, delicate taste and aroma which reminded me of the candy I ate as a child.
Research from Suleyman Demirel University in Turkey in 2007 showed that spearmint tea helps promote the production of female hormones and lowered androgen levels in women resulting in a decline of hirsutism (excessive facial hair growth). It is also beneficial for menopausal women who experience excessive facial hair growth. Drinking between two and five cups a day for five days during the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle will assist with these milder symptoms of hirsutism. Spearmint tea which grows wild in Turkey was used for the study. In men, spearmint tea was found to suppress the libido. For the article on this research, please check the NutraIngredients website.

Product Review: Celestial Seasonings Peppermint Tea
I’ve taken up drinking peppermint tea on occasion and after sampling several different brands of peppermint teas, I found the most delicious one was Celestial Seasonings Peppermint Tea. The only ingredient in the tea is peppermint leaves.
Smooth and pleasant tasting, peppermint tea is believed to cure problems of the digestive tract such as indigestion and has been used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. It is also believe to help with allergy symptoms and asthma. Most recently, research has shown that it can help relieve symptoms of hirsutism (excess facial hair) in women by reducing androgen levels. This is achieved by drinking the tea for five days during the follicular period of the menstrual cycle. Check out the Celestial Seasonings website here.

Product Review: Yogi Tea Egyptian Licorice Tea
After researching nutritional supplements for a diet for adrenal fatigue, I discovered that licorice root can assist with recovery. So I set out to find an organic licorice tea which would help with the situation. The first tea I bought was a sickly sweet organic licorice tea which I could barely drink because of its unpleasant sweetness.
The second tea I found was Yogi Tea’s “Egyptian Licorice” individual tea bags. It is a delicious organic tea, blended with delicate spices all organically certified. I love it!
On a further note about the benefits of licorice root. It has been used to treat stomach disorders such as constipation and flatulence. It is also used as a diuretic. Its other uses have included relieving rheumatism and arthritis, regulating low blood sugar, and for Addison’s disease. It also produces mild estrogenic effects and has been used to treat symptoms of menopause and regulating menstruation. The chief ingredient in licorice is glycyrrhizin which encourages the production of hormones such as hydrocortisone, giving it anti-inflammatory properties. Check out the Yogi Tea website here.

I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Drink Green Tea.
The health benefits of drinking green tea are numerous. After researching the benefits of green tea, I don’t know why anyone would NOT drink green tea. It is reputed to protect against:
Rheumatoid arthritis
High cholesterol levels
Cancer
Impaired immune function
Infection
Cardiovascular disease
The Chinese have used it medicinally for thousands of years to treat many disease symptoms. Modern research in both Asia and the West is starting to point to evidence to support the consumption of green tea. There has been research into the effect that green tea has on reducing cholesterol levels. Another study in 1994 by the Cancer Institute showed that green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancern by almost 60% in Chinese women and men. Additional studies done by the University of Purdue showed that green tea inhibits cancer cell growth.
How is green tea able to prove so successful in maintaining health? It contains catechin polyphenols, most especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is a very powerful antioxidant. EGCG has the ability to not only inhibit the growth of cancer cells but also can destroy cancer cells, without destroying healthy tissues. It is also beneficial to stop the formation of blood clots which illustrates green tea’s ability to prevent thrombosis which leads to heart attacks and stroke.
