Memory Loss

Memory loss is a reality for all of us as we grow older.  Unfortunately, from the mid 20s brain function begins to decline. It becomes more noted though for some of us as we approach our early 50s. Healthy EatingThere are many ways we can slow this decline. Training your brain with new activities as we age can help keep the brain “supple”. We are never too old to learn something new. Learn a new language, take a new course, read more books, pick up a new hobby, or any new activity which forces us to use our brain will help fight memory loss as we grow older. Learning to relax also helps immensely because stress inhibits optimum brain functioning.

Healthy eating habits will also slow or prevent mental decline. Eat plenty of iron rich eggs, oily fish and legumes will help prevent memory loss due to anemia. Herbal teas such as lemon balm help the brain retain and retrieve information. Green and black teas are also known to help prevent the memory loss which occurs with aging. Peppermint tea helps promote alertness and concentration.

Cooking with purple sage in stews, sauces and roasts aids the brain and using Oil of rosemary as an aromatherapy helps because it is known the stimulate alertness and memory. Foods containing anti-oxidants such as spinach or blueberries have been shown in studies to reverse mental decline.

Antiaging Skincare Vita-K Solution

A new antiaging skin care product we came across is Vıta*K Solutıon for Blotchy Skın,  We were trying to purchase Vitamin K supplements at the pharmacy to help with osteoporosis prevention. The pharmacy did not stock vitamin K but suggested Vita-K cream – to be absorbed by the skin. Topically applied vitamin K cream has been shown in studies to reduce uneven skin tones and bruising after laser treatments. It is used in many anti-aging skin creams.

Tested over a month long period of time, used twice a day as directed, we found it to be a nice moisturizer which slightly reduced blotchy, uneven skin tones and facial discoloration.

The ingredients list includes Purified Water, Isohexadecane, Grapeseed Oil, PEG-30 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Glycerin, PEG-15 Stearyl Ether, Sorbital, Dl-Panthenol, Phytonadione (Super Vitamin K), Sucrose Oleate, Propylene Glycol (&) Diazolidinyl Urea (&) Methylparaben (&) Propylparaben, Dimethicone, Magnesium Sulfate, Silica, PEG-40 Sorbitan Peroleate and Meadow Sweet Extract. As you can see by this list of ingredients, Vıta*K Solutıon is not an organic product and contains those dreadful parabens among other chemicals.

As an antiaging skincare product with the promise to fight the discoloration of blotchy skin, it did help to even out the skin tone.  It’s a trade off though with the parabens that are to be found in the solution.

Solutions for Dry Eyes

The Human EyeOne of the problems that can accompany growing older is the problem of dry eyes. For women, this is related to declining or fluctuating estrogen levels.   One of the solutions available to you is to supplement lowering estrogen with bioidentical hormones. In this article, we will discuss other solutions besides bioidentical hormone supplementation.

Natural supplements which can assist with dry eye syndrome are Primrose oil, Vitamin A, Omega-3 (fish oils such as salmon), Omega-6 fatty acids and Hyaluronic Acid (nature’s moisturizer). The Omega-3 and 6 can be taken as a supplement or ingested by including fish and nuts in your diet. Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, found naturally in all the tissues in the human body. It is found in the extra cellular matrix of the skin and in the synovial fluid that moisturizes the cartilage, eyes and joints. Hyaluronic acid is included in many of the lubricating eye drops medications on the market. Taking Vitamin C in higher doses depending on your age – and drinking plenty of water help improve the layer of tear film in your eyes. These supplements can be bought at your local health food store or pharmacy.

In addition, you can use the best lubricating eye drops. GenTeal eye drops and eye lubrication made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals are excellent products which can also be used with contact lenses. GenTeal eye lubrication in the tube should be used at night because it is a little “gooey” which allows it to sit longer in the eye than the drops.

When you blink your eyes, ensure that you blink often, fully closing the eye lid each time which helps distribute tear film across the entire eye. Blinking distributes the tears which bathe the eye, keep eyes moist, and clean out debris and dust. Tears, very important to the health of your eyes, neutralize microorganisms that can grow in the eye causing eye infections.

Also, beware of many medications which may increase the dryness of your eyes, including anti-depressants, antihistamines, certain blood pressure medicines, Parkinson’s medications, and birth control pills. Check with your doctor about discontinuing any of these medications vs. the problem of dry eyes.
