Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Fibrocystic breast disease affects more than 50% of women between the ages of 30 and 50. It usually accompanies PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome), but for some women it can last for months at a time.
Fibrocystic Breast Disease occurs when large painful lumps form in the breast(s). Symptoms include tenderness, pain and the formation of scar- like connective tissue. When a woman notices these lumps, she should visit a doctor and he/she will determine whether a mammogram is necessary. Although fibrocystic breasts are not a risk for breast cancer, a doctor should examine the breasts. Good to know: fibrocystic breast lumps are painful whereas cancerous lumps are not.
It is believed that hormonal shifts and high levels of prolactic and/or other estrogen hormones are responsible for the formation of these cysts. Also, caffeine, cola and chocolate are known to stimulate the growth of cysts.
Treatment for curing fibrocystic breast disease include eliminating all caffeine products (methyl xanthines) from the diet, taking certain health supplements, maintaining hormonal balance and following a low fat diet.
The Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study whereby 16 women with fibrocystic breast disease followed a diet where the fat in their diets was lowered to 20% of their total daily intake over a three month period. The result of this fat reduction was that their lactogentic hormone production was significantly reduced and they experienced relief from breast cysts. An elevated level of lactogentic hormone increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
Nutritional supplements can also assist in eliminating cysts in the breast. These supplements include: Evening primrose oil, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Vitamin A and magnesium. Check with your doctor, naturopath or compounding pharmacist for exact dosages.
